Partnership Leverages UNSi’s Expansive Network to Deliver to the Cloud

April 4, 2013, Pittsburgh, PA: United Network Services, Inc. (UNSi), a premiere next generation carrier and provider of “intelligent & flexible” Internet and managed services, has signed a partnership agreement with RapidScale, Inc., an emerging cloud application provider and part of UNSi’s new Ecosystem Program. The new partnership produces an efficient solution in delivering business applications to the cloud via UNSi’s private and secure MPLS network, providing a high-performance solution for businesses that depend on Quality of Service (QoS). CloudMail, CloudDesktop and CloudRecovery are other services that will be available via UNSi.

As cloud applications are becoming the main theme for businesses these days, security and QoS are issues that IT professionals face. UNSi’s CloudMPLS offering with RapidScale solves these cloud performance issues. “Adding RapidScale to our market-defining Ecosystem Program is an advantage to all of our partners and customers,” stated Allan Schwartz, SVP of Strategic Planning and Business Development. “Partnerships such as this one will continue to redefine the industry expectations of “traditional” telecom, and instead come to expect the best product when, where and as it is needed,” added Mr. Schwartz.

CloudMPLS will provide end-users the biggest benefit in the form of QoS, security and ROI since host site bandwidth costs will decrease as Internet access can be pulled from CloudMPLS facilities at a fraction of the cost compared to dedicated bandwidth to an office. “We’re thrilled to partner with UNSi since we see the empowerment of our two companies being able to change the way businesses buy business applications, manage business application performance and support end-users,” stated Randy Jeter, CEO of RapidScale. “The biggest opportunity with our CloudMPLS offering is that both companies are committed to building and deploying the most advanced business application network in the world.”

Providing Network Management, Broadband Solutions and Managed Services To Over 7,500 Branch Offices Nationwide

March 6, 2013, Pittsburgh, PA: The world’s largest service organization recently awarded United Network Services, Inc. (UNSi) a renewed contract valued at over $30 million dollars. The five-year contract with three, 3-year renewal options provides an aggregated broadband solution for over 7,500 branch offices located throughout North America. In addition to the broadband component, the contract calls for an integrated billing and IT vendor management solution.
UNSi has been providing services to this customer service organization since 2004. The renewed contract follows a cost-savings plan for this organization that UNSi previously spearheaded which achieved bandwidth upgrades at over 62% of the branch locations with no additional cost, and with no service interruptions during upgrades. Under the terms of the new contract, UNSi will continue to provide a streamlined broadband and network solution specifically delivering high-speed business-class Broadband/Internet connections to branch sites nationwide, with reach to even the most remote locations. Previously, UNSi custom designed an electronically integrated billing system which provides automated back-office administrative support for this business entity, and consolidated billing – this organization will continue to leverage this efficient, time saving solution. UNSi’s relationships with over 2,000 broadband providers nationwide allows it to manage the myriad service provider relationships, regardless of how geographically dispersed they are. This large service organization receives one bill from UNSi, instead of various bills from hundreds of service providers, and UNSi manages all vendor relations.

“We are proud to receive a renewed contract with this organization to continue to streamline their broadband solutions and to improve their IT vendor management and billing platform,” stated Francis John, President & CEO of UNSi. “Being awarded this contract again, is a true testament to our company’s network expertise and dedicated customer service that we have provided to this business entity since 2004. We have built a strong partnership with them over the years, and are continually working together to provide cost-efficient solutions that match their current business and technology objectives.”

Now, 12 years later, it’s taking its connectivity and channel strategy further to create an ecosystem approach to business communications requirements. The idea is to support an environment in which businesses can mix and match networks with application and collocation services in a highly customized and managed fashion.

UNSi was founded in 2001 as American Broadband Inc., and quickly established a reputation as a broadband connectivity aggregator with 2,000 providers and servers nationwide. It still has one of the largest broadband footprints in North America. But in 2011, the company decided to change its name to UNSi to signal its growth strategy of adding new types of network offerings to its large-scale broadband implementation capabilities.

Allan Schwartz, UNSI SVP of Strategic Planning and Business Development

To that end, in January 2012 it acquired IPNetZone, which gave it its own MPLS network and exchange platform. “So instead of just managing networks for others, we created a next-gen carrier network,” said Allan Schwartz, senior vice president of strategic planning and business development at the provider. “So we aggregate, we’re a managed services provider and a carrier. It just goes to show that the old paradigms
are completely gone. There’s no right or wrong business model answer – it just comes down to enabling flexibility.”

Now, the provider has more than 2,000 underlying networks and 18 points of presence (PoPs), plus at least 150 network-to-network interfaces (NNIs) that allow it to interconnect to buy and sell Layer 1 and 2 network connections directly with other carriers, globally. The result is the ability to bring a range of connectivity options to the table.

“We can build a private line with an Ethernet over copper (EoC) connection here and connect it to a private line over there,” explained Schwartz. “No one else is doing something that creative. We basically solve a lot of headaches. And for European and Asian customers, they may have a hard time getting to secondary markets like Austin or Knoxville. We can help them with that.”

In terms of coverage, copper, fiber, fixed wireless, 3G/4G and cable coax all are part of the portfolio. “But we can offer the same IP address regardless of which circuit happens to carry the traffic” Schwartz noted. It’s the same IP Address to fail over to as well. So we can mix and match the technologies across locations, manage all the devices and offer them access to one portal to view all of them.”

From a back-office standpoint, the company proactively monitors all on-net endpoints and sends notifi cations when they aren’t performing up to task. Information from managed routers is handled by UNSi’s primary NOC in the United States, with three other secondary NOCs available for redundancy.

Thus, underpinned by the concept of the intelligent network, UNSi’s main goal for the ecosystem is to engender a fl exibility that allows the infrastructure to support smart applications.

“Maybe today you just need a DIA, but tomorrow you’ll require an MPLS connection,” explained Schwartz. “As a company, you may just be looking for price and bandwidth now, but later you’ll have a need to reach, say, a cloud app. Instead of worrying about being locked into a three-year contract or having to forklift the infrastructure, UNSi offers a company the ability to evolve its services as needed.”

UNSi also works with a number of hosted application partners, amongst whom Schwartz says they have seen a large shift. “A few years ago they wanted to sell the whole solution—router, apps, networks,” he explained. But margins on networks are not as good as they are on applications,
so many are turning to long-term networking partners to help with that piece.

“That’s where the whole ecosystem is getting some traffic,” Schwartz said. “All the stakeholders can come together, enabled by a smart, fl exible network.”

“We’re not built for everybody,” Schwartz said. “We are geo-diverse, support complex installations and are there for the entire lifecycle of the relationship.”

This dovetails nicely with what master agents and their teams can help bring to the table. In fact, UNSi has been ramping up its channel strategy in an effort to get closer to its sales opportunities. Partners bring in a consultative piece to the conversation that can help establish what’s required by the end user from a technical standpoint and create an ecosystem based discussion of the company’s specifi c applications needs.
UNSi has signed on a handful of partners so far and expects to announce who they are in the fi rst part of the year.

Provides Cost Effective Network Redundancy and Business Continuity

July 12, 2012, Lemont Furnace, PA: United Network Services, Inc. (UNSi), a next generation carrier and provider of managed services, has announced today a unique back-up solution called Same IP Failover (SIF) that enables a business to automatically failover from a primary Internet connection to a back-up Internet connection while maintaining the same inbound IP Addresses without the need for Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). SIF is one of the first products to emerge from the acquisition and integration of IPNetZone Communications that UNSi completed this last quarter.

With IT VAR’s and IT Directors in mind, UNSi designed SIF to simplify the management of maintaining inbound access to their facilities during outages of one or more of their Internet access circuits. UNSi’s SIF product is a managed solution that is supported by service level agreements, and typically requires an on-net circuit coupled with an off-net circuit. It provides a single handoff to the client firewall that maintains the same IP space regardless of the path it takes. Using SIF, UNSi can deliver a /29 to a client across multiple paths, eliminating the need for BGP or for an end user to procure their own autonomous system number (ASN). SIF can be delivered via various different access options – copper, fiber, coax or wireless.
The on-net service for SIF can include DIA, MPLS/DIA, or VPLS/DIA. An example of a typical scenario would be an Ethernet over Copper (EoC) circuit coupled with a cable modem and managed router bringing it all together. Allan Schwartz, Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning & Business Development at UNSi noted, “We took our SIF offering even further by allowing the end user to bring their own off-net or Broadband circuit, truly enabling the solution to be highly flexible and customizable to meet each customer’s unique needs.” SIF is provisioned across UNSi’s unique network of 17 nationwide POPs, and over 2,000 underlying vendors, making it commercially available in over 95% markets nationwide.

UNSi is currently offering a special introductory summer promotion for SIF bundled with Ethernet over Copper. Please contact a UNSi representative for special pricing or call 855.UNSi.999 or email partnerships@unsi.net.
